A HISTORY OF FIRSTS

In 1875, Joseph Bulova immigrated to America and, at just 19 years old, opened his first jewelry store in lower Manhattan. The demand for his products grew, prompting him to establish his own manufacturing facility in Bienne, Switzerland. A full collection of men’s watches followed, accompanied by a series of innovative advertising campaigns in local newspapers. After the war in 1945, Joseph Bulova opened his own watchmaking school, which served, among others, war-affected soldiers looking to get back on their feet. Today, Bulova remains a renowned watch brand, recognized worldwide, with its headquarters in the Empire State Building – close to where it all began.

Bulova’s collection spans from classic men’s and women’s watches to diving watches and the innovative and groundbreaking CURV models. Throughout its history, Bulova has launched a multitude of iconic models, each contributing to the brand’s legacy and continuing to add chapters to the story of Bulova as one of the most innovative watch brands in the world.

Bulova’s legendary engineering expertise was tapped by NASA to help with the U.S. space efforts. That partnership led to 46 missions together, from the mid-1950s into the 1970s, and Bulova’s innovative Accutron technology was used in all instrument panel clocks and timekeeping mechanisms.
Customized for astronomical conditions, the watch could precisely track time and ensure that no one ran out of oxygen, water or battery power in the portable life-support-system backpack. It was also used to back up the on-board timers for the critical reentry into the earth’s atmosphere.

REVOLUTION IN TIMEKEEPING

FROM HUMMING TO HISTORY

When delving into the annals of watchmaking history, the name “Bulova Accutron” resonates with watch aficionados, signaling a dramatic shift in the world of timekeeping. This blog aims to unravel the magic behind this iconic name and why it remains a groundbreaking achievement even today.

A GLIMPSE BACK IN TIME

Launched in 1960, the Accutron wasn’t just any timepiece; it was the world’s first fully electronic watch, distinguishing itself with the absence of springs and gears. The secret? A tuning fork. By using a tuning fork to regulate the time, the Accutron produced a distinct humming sound instead of the familiar ticking of traditional watches.

DESIGN AND INNOVATION

The open-face design of some of the early Accutron models showcased the watch’s tuning fork and electronic circuits, giving wearers a glimpse into its groundbreaking mechanism. This audacious design choice underscored the brand’s commitment to innovation and aesthetics. Notably, its precision was so renowned that it became an integral tool for America’s space missions during the 1960s.
