HOW OFTEN SHOULD A MECHANICAL WATCH BE SERVICED?
A manual or automatic mechanical watch should generally be serviced every 5–7 years. The ideal interval depends on the movement’s design and the longevity of the lubricating oils. Some movements feature larger oil reservoirs in the gear train bearings, allowing them to run longer between services.
WHEN IS SERVICING NECESSARY?
Servicing is required when the oils inside the movement begin to dry out. Whether the watch is worn daily or stored away, the oils will eventually lose their lubricating properties. As friction increases between the gears, this can lead to poor timekeeping—and in the worst cases, cause the watch to stop altogether, especially at night or during periods of inactivity.
WHY DOES A MECHANICAL WATCH NEED SERVICING?
As oil dries out, the gears, pivots, and mainspring lose their lubrication. This leads to wear and can result in:
• Reduced accuracy: The watch no longer keeps time correctly.
• Shortened power reserve: The watch runs out of energy faster than usual.
• Metal wear and debris: The mainspring wears down, producing metal dust that can damage the movement.
In automatic watches, the winding mechanism is particularly vulnerable. Wear on the winding wheels can reduce the efficiency of energy transfer from your wrist’s movement to the mainspring—often leading to poor performance or complete stoppage.
CHRONOGRAPHS REQUIRE SPECIAL ATTENTION
Chronographs contain many intricate components that require precise lubrication – especially within the stopwatch mechanism. Without proper lubrication, the pushers may become stiff, and the overall functionality can deteriorate.
Regular servicing ensures accuracy and extends the lifespan of your watch.
